Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic never ended. Covid is still spreading at high rates at multiple points most years. The good news is that we have a better understanding of the virus now than we did at the start and we have great tools to mitigate spread. The bad news is that through the more recent research, we’ve uncovered that COVID is not a harmless disease, and even if death isn’t a primary risk for most people, long COVID and other longer term symptoms and conditions are a substantial concern. Long COVID rates range from 1.7-77.7%. Risk of LC increases with each infection. COVID has been found to be a multisystemic neurovascular condition that has the potential and ability to damage almost if not all organs in the body, including the brain. Disabled and chronically ill people are unfortunately more likely to experience these effects and the on-going pandemic continues to disproportionately impact disabled and BIPOC communities.

Engaging your brain can be a great way to help with pain, yet when you are in pain it is very hard to focus and watching TV or listening to something just doesn't do the trick. Research suggests that the trick to using distraction for pain relief is to make that distraction engaging enough to take your mind off of the pain experience. This means that something like a simple video game that is challenging enough to keep you engaged, but easy enough not to stress you out, can be a great way to keep your mind off of the pain and on something you enjoy. Enter: cozy games. These are games that are often beautiful, with good story lines and pretty graphics, that are relatively simple to play yet still immersive and engaging. They can help you to take your mind off of the pain while keeping you more engaged than a TV show and thus distracting your nervous system, even just for a little while, giving you a bit of a break.
